The Review

6 organic mince pies, luxurious all-butter pastry, deep-filled with a deliciously fruity mincemeat and crowned with a light sugar dusting

‘A lot better than expected and so much better than their gluten version. Lots of mince meat, wholemeal pastry which was surprisingly nice!’ – Su

‘The greatest come back in mince pie history. From the company that gave us the Organic, gluten free, cardboard tasting pie comes this, a surprising pie which looks good and tastes better. It has a home-made look about it and good colour to the pastry without being artificial. Some of the pies in the pack were so full of mince meat they were literally bursting! If you are tempted to buy these be very careful that you don’t get the gluten free 4 pack by mistake.’ – Adam

‘What a difference from the cardboard tasting grey offerings previously reviewed
from the same manufacturer. Good weight, almost ‘homemade’ taste and sugar dusted lid adds to experience. I liked them.’ – Piet

‘This came as a pleasant surprise to me, the Village Bakery have made a very good pie here. After the horrific tasting gluten free version – which I was too scared to try after fellow reviewers reactions – I was apprehensive, but wrongly so. This pie has one of the nicest pasties I’ve tried, I enjoyed the taste and texture and there was no pastry overload to suffer. The mince too is very good and the sugared top offers a little sweetness and texture to the overall experience. The box has a sophisticated feel which is much better than the gluten free variety with a large, detailed photo down one edge which looks great in our stack of boxes. The pie too looks good; darker than most, it has a more home made feel to it. Well done to the Village Bakery for crafting such a fine pie, it’s just a shame that people who need gluten/wheat/dairy free mince pies have to suffer with it’s much poorer sibling – I pity you.’ – Mince Pie Virgin

‘The packaging oozed quality, as indeed did my pie (literally spilling out of its hat – is that the correct technical term for the top of the pie?). The pie was obviously well packed with a moist & delicious mince, providing a good foil to the generously thick crust. The only downside was the amount of sugar that decorated the pie, making the overall taste unnecessarily sweet.’ – Chris

‘I was expecting a mince pie disaster. The previous incarnation of the village bakery was like being hit by a disgusting taste spade. This organic luxurious mincer however was not one but five steps up on the previous model. It had a great size and weight with a healthy glow about it. When opened, the pie was a tad hollow but considering the size it still had plenty of filling. The pastry had a nice homemade taste which complemented the overall flavour.’ – Adam

Organic Mince Pies. Deep filled with a deliciously fruity mincemeat. Made in a dedicated gluten, wheat & dairy free bakery (from hell).

I could only stomach a quarter of the pie. For the first second after putting it my mouth I was thinking of a rating of around 3 but then the cardboard pastry taste hit me, and stayed with me. I imagine if I squashed a brown cardboard box with water and some sugar the taste would be similar. The pies even look like they've been made of cardboard!

‘All I can say is cardboard. Looks bad and tastes bad, terrible!.’ – Su

‘OH MY GOD! Those are the the words that crept from my pie muzzled mouth upon taste contact. Probably the worst mince pie I have ever tasted. To make the pastry the makers must have used health food dregs like bark, sand, sponge, reconstituted squirrel nuts, month old bran and cardboard. I admit that after one bite I had to abandon the pie in my hand to the bin by the window. I leave this review with a tut tut tut and a shake of the head.’ – Adam

‘I could only stomach a quarter of the pie. For the first second after putting it my mouth I was thinking of a rating of around 3 but then the cardboard pastry taste hit me, and stayed with me. I imagine if I squashed a brown cardboard box with water and some sugar the taste would be similar. The pies even look like they’ve been made of cardboard! They are gluten free, wheat free and dairy free but sadly not taste free. Horrible.’ – Paul

<img class="size-thumbnail wp-image-301 alignright" title="Paul's photography makes this pie look much more appetising than it really is.
‘Fear gripped me when trying this pie because not only is “one of the healthy ones”, but fellow reviewer Adam’s first bite was met with a pained cry of “Oh my God”. The pastry, which is dark like wholemeal bread, was perhaps the most crumbly yet and the pie was a right mess by the time it reached my mouth. I was surprised that the first taste was not too bad, but then, just a second later the dull taste of corrugated cardboard hit me occasionally penetrated with the nasty sharp spike of the filling. The pastry stuck in my teeth so for minutes afterwards I kept tasting cardboard, I think it came from the hole in the packaging. Finishing this pie was one of the best things I have ever done, not because I loved it but because I loathed it, and never ever want to punish my body (particularly as it’s my birthday today) like that way again.’ – Mince Pie Virgin

‘Surprisingly sugary for a healthy mince pie. Good-tasting mince meat and rustic-looking pastry – but a curious texture that suggests there’s something missing that would normally be included. Pretty good for a healthy option though, which gets better as you eat it.’ – Marco
