An excellent value for money pie, perfect for catering on mass whilst not breaking the bank. This is a tasty pie which has the perfect mincemeat to pastry ratio.

The Review

Sainsbury’s deep mince pies. Butter enriched shortcrust pastry with a rich fruity mincemeat filling.

‘Yeah, what, mmm, yeah they are ok. In the overall pie premier league these are indeed the mid table of mince pies. A standard mince pie that could be to some peoples taste. It was not offensive to taste but didn’t quite hit the mark for me. A wonderful average.’ – Adam

‘An excellent value for money pie, perfect for catering on mass whilst not breaking the bank. This is a tasty pie which has the perfect mincemeat to pastry ratio. If there was a Sainsbury’s in Guernsey I’d buy these!’ – Paul

‘The first thing that struck me about these pies was the grainy feeling beneath my overly sensitive fingers. Some of the sugar that adorns the pies cap had fallen off and was stuck to the foil tin, I didn’t like the texture and found it off putting. The pie was easy to eject from it’s case and looked quite pretty with a nice colour pastry. On the cap, moulded from pastry, is picture of a dog with two close set eyes, a little nose, floppy ears and a shaggy mane at the bottom. I presume this must be Santa’s dog – maybe a pet to amuse his elves during the long summer months before the toy making rush of Christmas.

Sadly this was another deep filled mince pie to suffer the pastry curse, the first bite being all pastry and no filling. The shortcrust was very crumbly and fell apart with very little pressure from the jaw meaning you need to take care eating this pie. Things did improve when I discovered the mince, it was flavoursome but certainly not the best I’ve tried. Also, very disturbingly, I found some of it crunchy – not a pleasant texture for a mince pie, but better than the after taste which reminded me of the vaporous odour of melting plastic. If Sainsbury’s and Jamie Oliver can fix these few problems then this could be a very good pie but it falls short in too many areas for top marks.’ – Mince Pie Virgin

‘Tastes good and stacked with mice meat rather than air. Very good value for money!.’ – Su

6 mince pies, a little less filling, yule love them

The packaging does say 'a little less filling', I find this slightly miss-leading, it should say 'hardly any filling'. The filling resembled a spreading of Marmite with a few bumps where the 3 pieces of fruit popped up into the small space between layers of pastry. Cheap, yes, but I'd rather go hungry.

6 mince pies, a little less filling, yule love them

‘Not the worst but certainly not the best. Not enough filling so mainly pastry, but what do you expect for 59p! Basic packaging but good for the environment as not a lot of it.’ – Su

‘The packaging does say ‘a little less filling’, I find this slightly miss-leading, it should say ‘hardly any filling’. Cheap, yes, but I’d rather go hungry.’ – Paul

The Sainsbury’s basic range mince pie is a very strange pie to judge. Its appearance as a size zero pie is comical at best, but I’m safe in the knowledge that six of these amount to only 59p. On inspection the filling was brimming over the pastry cap and it was a real shame to find out that that was the majority of the ‘filling’. The taste was disapproving but did improve slightly as I remembered the loose change price.’ – Adam

The budget packaging is different, with a bonus point for word play, and the low-filled, low-profile makes this the perfect pie for a credit crunched Christmas. The foil dish is barely convex but the taste is fine and you have to admire the unpretentious, cost-cutting cheek. A winner.’ – Marco

‘After finishing this pie – which did not take long due to it’s meager size – I needed to make sure the foil tray was still in my hand. It was, so if the tray hadn’t caused the metallic taste in my mouth what had? I’m starting to regret not following my instincts and avoiding this pie altogether, but for less than 10p a pie what can I expect? This is truly a budget mince pie and should be avoided unless you like your pastry filled with iron shavings. Come to think of it, you’re better off eating the 10 pence penny the pie costs as it tastes the same, has a similar nutritional value and size and you can reclaim it back later!’ – Mince Pie Virgin
